Monthly Program
APRIL PROGRAMFriday, April 25, 2003 7:00-9:00 p.m. This is the second program offered by the newly establish Special Interest Group, "Multisensory Approaches to Integral Intercultural Communication." PROGRAM: PRESENTER: PLACE: LANGUAGE: FEE:
In both intercultural relations and Aikido we are trying to help people cope with an occurrence that causes an individual to react to a critical incident subjectively. When someone is either reacting to a critical incident or causing one, the anxiety that arises diminishes the ability to cope with his or her external environment. This anxiety manifests itself in different ways through fight or flight mechanisms that mirror the same reactions in a more subdued form when someone is under physical attack. Aikido in most of its manifestations is a non-combative martial art that uses a variety of flowing and bending techniques to harmonize with an opponent. These techniques have many practical applications that can assist someone who finds him or herself in an anxiety-producing occurrence. The examination of these various exercises, relationships, and techniques can be extremely useful for sojourners and expatriates coping with the anxieties that present themselves in day-to-day life. They will also provide added insight to analog and digital communicators.
