2006 Retreat
October 14 (Sat) & October 15 (Sun)
The Intercultural Education Praxis Seminar this year will be held in Izukogen on Saturday Oct.14 and Sunday 15. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to exchange new knowledge and ideas while relaxing physically and mentally at an “Onsen” by the sea. At this seminar, participants share their ideas for intercultural education and training with each other, and have an opportunity to introduce their ideas on practice at a presentation session. This year we have invited Dr. Takayo Inoue, professor of Meiji Gakuin University, as a special guest to conduct a workshop upon macro counseling. Dr. Inoue is interested in intercultural counseling, reconciliation, and community counseling. This year again, SIETAR Japan would like to invite you to come and share your experience and ideas with others. Please join us.

“The theory of Macro Counseling and its development: The basics for intercultural education practice.” Takayo Inoue (Meiji Gakuin University) #J
12:30-13:30 Lunch
13:30- Closing
Having been involved in counseling with international students and other non-Japanese living and working in Japan, the presenter proposes a framework of Macro Counseling in a bio-psycho-social context. This is a praxis theory of counseling which is derived from three approaches: developmental, community and multicultural.
The theory suggests a pluralistic and synthesized state of support, which consists of fourteen activities, for individuals from diverse backgrounds. The principle of the theory is empathetic communication. This is a communication skill not only for psychotherapists but also for individuals who are in charge of intercultural education. The workshop will cover four dimensions of the theory: 1) empathetic communication to deepen understanding, 2) ‘transcend method’ to deal with intercultural conflict, 3) the psychology of reconciliation, i.e. becoming an intercultural mediator, and 4) a theory of community counseling that leverages community support for individuals from diverse backgrounds. As theoretical input and exercises will be combined, it is hoped that this workshop will provide an opportunity to share cases that participants and the presenter have experienced as well as to enjoy the activities.
