Description of the Presentation:
A binary comparison of Japanese communicative styles vs. those of Anglo-American has been one of the popular teaching methods for intercultural communication at the university in Japan. However, a comparison of the communicative styles of plural ethnic groups has been introduced lately. I would like to make two suggestions for an effective method for teaching intercultural communication.

  1. A tripartite comparison.
  2. Introducing Intercultural Communication in conflict through video.

Profile of the Presenter:
Born in Oita. Trained as a cultural anthropologist at Ohio State University and the University of Kansas. Fieldwork in Palau for a comparative analysis of Colonial administration in Micronesia before and after WWII. Taught intercultural communication at Hiroshima University before moving to Tokushima Bunri University in 1992. Research interests: A comparative analysis of communicative styles of ethnic minorities in the US; a sociology of anthropological knowledge; intercultural communication; ethnic humor; laughter, festivals in Japan, etc.

NOTICE: We have no meeting in February. In March, Anka Veronika Badurina, a Ph.D. Candidate in Cultural Anthropology at Kyoto University, will give a lecture under the title of "Constructing Gender for Japanese Television Commercials".
