A Look at Latin American and Japanese Communication Styles

Description of the Presentation:
The program will begin with a showing of her 25-minute documentary
video, "Salsa in Japan: a Japanese and Latino Mix". The video
gives a brief history of Salsa, the immigration of Japanese to Latin America
and the reverse immigration to Japan. It also shows the two different
dance worlds in Japan, one which draws more Japanese and the other which
draws more Latin Americans dekasegi's. After the video, she will continue
the discussion of communication style differences between the two groups.
Profile of the Presenter:
Beth Chamberlin received her MA in Social and Anthropology from the California
Institute of Integral Studies in 1995. The following year she came to
Japan where she has spent much of her free time in the Latin American
community.
She made a documentary video which is being distributed by the UC Berkeley
Media Center. She is currently teaching Intercultural Communication and
English at Ritsumeikan University and Kyoto University of Foreign Studies.
