Description of the Presentation:
The Maximizing Study Abroad research program is a three-year project intended to measure the effects of a new curriculum on study abroad students' intercultural development, culture learning, language development, and language learning. The project utilizes an experimental design where the treatment group is using the Maximizing Study Abroad materials and the control group is not. Both the experimental and comparison groups of students will complete four instruments as pre- and post-test measures: Language Strategy Use Survey (Cohen & Chi, 2001), Speech Act Measure of Language Gain (Cohen & Shively, 2002), Strategies in Learning Culture Inventory (Paige, Rong, & Zhang, 2001), and Intercultural Development Inventory (Hammer & Bennett, 1998). This presentation describes the study and presents initial findings from the research.
