Description of the Program:
Are Japanese novels more emotive than novels written in English? In the course of communication, it is important to understand the affective stance of the speaker as well as the content of the message. In reading novels, the narrator·s speech style and standpoint will strongly influence the impression readers get. Therefore, I will focus on the narrator·s presentation. Employing the framework of Discourse Modality, I will examine indicators such as Japanese sentence-final particles and English hedges, to analyze how and why affective expressions differ between English and Japanese novels. Further, I·d like to talk about translation as cross-cultural communication.

Profile of the Presenter:
Having received her Ph.D. from Kobe University in 2003, Noriko Ihara continues to research translation theory and discourse studies. She is currently teaching translation at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies, and English (reading and TOEIC) at Kobe University, Osaka City University and Ottemon Gakuin University as a part-time lecturer. The title of her doctoral dissertation is <Speech Presentation in translation: From a Perspective of Foreignizing and Domesticating Strategy>. This presentation is based on one given at the IAICS International Conference on Cross-Cultural Communication, 2005, at Chinese Culture University, Taipei.
