January 25, 2003 1:30-5:00 p.m. ワークショップ/WORKSHOP: 講師/PRESENTER: Holly Thompson 場所/PLACE: 言語/LANGUAGE: English; Discussion groups will be conducted in both English and Japanese as desired. 参加費費/FEE: Member \3000 Student Member \2000 Non-member \5000 Holly Thompson, the author of Ash, will introduce her bicultural fiction prior to small group discussions of characters and scenes from the novel that raise critical intercultural issues, particularly regarding identity. The workshop will provide a framework for participants to imagine alternative scenarios with different resolutions. Participants are strongly encouraged to treat themselves to reading Ash prior to the workshop, but the critical scenes to be discussed will be described and made available as needed so that people are encouraged to attend whether or not they have had a chance to read the book. Discussion groups will be conducted in both English and Japanese as desired. In addition to personal interest, teachers may find this workshop useful professionally for both its content and methodology. Ash is available through online book sources, at bookstores in Japan, and will be sold at SIETAR meetings prior to January.
Holly Thompson has a master's degree in creative writing, and she teaches at Yokohama City University. Her short fiction and articles on Japanese culture have been published in magazines in the U.S. and Japan. Ash is her first novel. She lives with her husband and two children in Kamakura.
i-Land Tower can be accessed directly from Nishi-Shinjuku Station on the Marunouchi Line by following the underground path. From JR Shinjuku Station it is approximately a 10 minute walk. Once you get to the building, select an elevator that stops on the 4th floor. After you get off on the 4th floor, walk to the right until you get to the last door on your left.
