SIETAR International
1974: “Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research (SIETAR)” was founded in the U.S.
1982: The name of the organization was changed from “SIETAR” to “SIETAR International.”
“SIETAR International” Headquarter was in Washington, D.C., and intercultural specialists from all over the world joined to learn with and from each other at the SIETAR International events. Regional SIETARs such as SIETAR Japan, SIETAR Europa, and SIETAR Indonesia were established.
“SIETAR International” Annual Congress was held in the U.S. and Canada. In 1998, the SIETAR International Annual Congress was held in Japan.
1999: “SIETAR International” was dissembled. Each regional SIETAR such as SIETAR USA, SIETAR Japan, and SIETAR Europa
started to operate independently. The SIETARs around the world are connected under the Global Network.
Now: Today, the number of independent SIETARs around the world has increased to 18 (nine of which are part of SIETAR Europa).
We cooperate within a global network (listed under SIETAR Global Network). Members of any SIETAR can participate in
SIETAR programs around the world with member or discounted fees.
SIETAR Japan
1985: Nan Sussman, a member of the SIETAR International Governing Council and an exchange scholar at Keio University,
organized the meeting to consider the possibility of creating a Japan affiliate to Sietar International.
“Intercultural Communication Discussion Group” started its activities to establish SIETAR Japan, and held a SIETAR Japan Inauguration Event the next year.
2000: The Japanese name of the organization was changed to “異文化コミュニケーション学会.”
2002: SIETAR Japan was officially recognized as a "Cooperating Academic Research Organization" of "Japan Society for the
Promotion of Science (JSPS)."
*SIETAR Japan engages in international exchanges and activities through the SIETAR Global Network; however, its
organization and operational funding remain entirely independent.
*SIETAR Japan is a multicultural and multilingual organization. Members of all nationalities are welcome, and our regular
programs are conducted in both Japanese and English. Communications and publications, such as the annual report of
activities and the academic journal, are also bilingual.
